Never a More Likely Pair

Deep in my soul, I believe that there is no better match than books and music. Books alone are one of the most magnificent creations to grace the planet earth. But then, you add music to the mix? Songs that can evoke emotions or the mood of an entire book/fictional relationship? Hands down, best feeling.

As a reader, I’m constantly connecting books and songs. To this day, I still replay love stories in my head that I read years ago just by hearing a song I deemed perfect for that fictional couple.

Maybe I’m alone in this or perhaps you’re on the same boat as me. Welcome to the party. I have fruit snacks. No t-shirts yet. But maybe we should. Or some really fuzzy hoodies because I’m always cold. And some socks to match. Maybe even a blanket. Long story short, there is phenomenal potential for swag.

I’ll get back to the reason you clicked on this blog in the first place. Here is a list of songs I either listened to while writing my book, Distant Stars, or songs I heard after the fact that I thought fit perfectly. Check out my playlist and let me know your song choices!

Distant Stars OFFICIAL Book Playlist (SPOILER FREE)

  • Song: Brother
  • Artist: Kodaline
  • Why: There’s no hiding the fact that this book is a romance. However, there is such a strong thread woven throughout the entire story of brotherhood. This song inspired, not only Will’s relationship with his brother, but ultimately where they both land at the end of the story.

  • Song: It’ll Be Okay
  • Artist: Shawn Mendes
  • Why: Before we talk any further about this choice, I am fully aware that this is a breakup song. Maybe it doesn’t seamlessly fit with my storyline but hang in there with me for a moment. First of all, the melody was easy for me to write alongside. Then, it says things like “I will love you either way” and “I start to imagine a world where we don’t collide”… and it just ignited something for me near the end of the book. IYKYK

  • Song: Serenade
  • Artist: BANNERS
  • Why: This song might just be one of my favorites on this entire list. If you know me or have been around here long enough, you know I’m a big fan of BANNERS. His songs just always seem to hit perfectly and this one is no different. If I had to choose a song from Will to Hannah, this would be it. Knowing their journey together, I still get emotional when I hear it. (Honestly, I’m playing it as I write this and I feel it in my chest. So beautiful.)

  • Song: Rewrite the Stars
  • Artist: James Arthur + Anne Marie
  • Why: Oh, James Arthur. Where do I start? First of all, stars. Can’t miss the theme there, guys. But then add in: lovers fated to not be together, rewriting their own story, and wanting each other enough to overcome the overwhelming obstacles. It’s a win, win, win.

  • Song: No One Knows Us
  • Artist: BANNERS
  • Why: A double feature for BANNERS? The shock is evident on my face. 😉 This one ties into Will and Hannah’s love story. When the couple just wants to hide from the world so that they might have a chance of being together… And the duet just seems so perfect for this dual POV novel.
